Kala, Malayan Sun Bear

Yesterday, June 25, 2009, Kala, a Malayan Sun Bear at The Miami Metro Zoo underwent a root canal on her upper right canine tooth. Richard Souviron and Dr. Randy Groh of Dental Leaders in Coral Gables along with the Zoo’s Lead Veterinarian Dr. Christine Miller.
The procedure was successful and took only about forty-five minutes to complete. Kala was then taken back to her holding area (aka, Night house) where anesthetization was reversed.

Malayan Sun Bears are an endangered species found in small isolated forest areas of Thailand, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. They are the smallest of the world’s bears usually weighing between 100 and 200 pounds. They are expert tree climbers and are considered to be one of the most dangerous animals within their range in the wild. As omnivores, they feed on a variety of fruits and vegetation, insects, birds, and small mammals. Twenty-five Sun Bears have been born at Metrozoo since 1981 making it one of the most successful breeding programs in the country. Ron Magill
Kala shares her exhibit with “Liberty” a 23 year old male who was born at the San Diego Zoo. Kala was born at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle and arrived at Miami Metrozoo on loan in September of 1994. Ron Magill
